Although I am by now almost fluent in Marcel Marceau (even if I am regularly drifting off into panto without the singing) and also my quick-drawing skills have improved tremendously over the last few months, I am often enough meeting the limits of the explicable. As happened with muesli – but the simple solution was to bring in a cereal box as visual aid.
To be honest, I think can handle any noun that describes a visible thing, the problem comes with abstract ideas and – horror of horrors – grammatical concepts. Conjugation I can explain fairly well through a list of names. Gender they somehow accept although I suspect that they don’t really understand them and haven’t got a clue yet what it means if adjectives are added. I shudder what will happen if they ever have to learn about cases and gender in combination.
The only ray of hope is that more and more books and language courses for Arabic and Farsi speakers have hit the market. I hope with the help of such a program they can really make progress with their German skills (after alphabetisation, that is). I myself am not in a position to judge the quality – since half of my class now speaks Farsi I have all but given up on improving my Arabic language skills.
Obwohl ich inzwischen fast fließend Marcel Marceau spreche (auch wenn ich öfter in die Schmierenkomödie abdrifte) und auch meine Schnellzeichenfähigkeiten immer besser werden, stoße ich doch oft genug an die Grenzen des Erklärbaren. Sowie bei Müsli – da gab es aber die einfache Lösung, eine Packung als Anschauungsmaterial mitzubringen.
Um ehrlich zu sein, kann ich jedes Hauptwort, das sichtbare Dinge beschreibt, schon irgendwie erklären, die wahren Probleme tauchen auf, wenn es um abstrakte Dinge und – behüte! – grammatikalische Konzepte geht. Das Beugen von Verben kann ich ganz gut durch eine Liste mit Namen erklären. Geschlecht akzeptieren sie, auch wenn ich nicht glaube, dass sie es ganz verstehen und noch nicht ahnen, was das heißt, wenn Adjektive ins Spiel kommen. Mich schaudert’s, wenn ich daran denke, was geschieht, wenn sie Fälle in Verbindung mit Geschlecht kennenlernen.
Der einzige Lichtblick ist, dass mehr und mehr Bücher und Sprachkurse für Farsi- oder Arabischsprechende auf den Markt kommen. Ich hoffe, dass diese Programme wirklich beim Spracherwerb hilfreich sind (nach der Alphabetisierung, versteht sich). Selbst beurteilen kann ich das nicht – nachdem nun die Hälfte meiner Klasse Farsi spricht, habe ich fast ganz aufgegeben, meine Arabischkenntnisse zu vertiefen.
